Just a day after Democrats in the GOP-controlled\u00a0US House\u00a0of Representatives\u00a0helped\u00a0Republicans\u00a0send a major spying bill to the Senate, despite warnings that it was dead on arrival there, both chambers on Thursday passed a 45-day extension to continue negotiations.<\/p>\n

The Senate approved the stopgap bill for Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)\u2014which allows the federal government to spy on electronic communications of noncitizens located outside the\u00a0United States\u00a0without a warrant\u2014by a voice vote. The House\u00a0signed off\u00a0with a 261-11 vote, just hours before a\u00a0previous\u00a0short-term extension was set to expire.<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0and his homeland security adviser,\u00a0Stephen Miller, have been demanding a \u201cclean\u201d extension of the program, while critical lawmakers from both parties and over 100 civil society groups have\u00a0called for\u00a0privacy\u00a0reforms to protect Americans whose data is swept up in federal surveillance efforts.<\/p>\n

Hajar Hammado, senior policy adviser at Demand Progress, one of the organizations leading reform calls, said in a Thursday statement that \u201cintelligence agencies, the\u00a0White House, and their allies in Congress have tried every trick in the book from fearmongering to misinformation, but they still can\u2019t get their warrantless FISA reauthorization across the finish line.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason we keep ending up at this point is congressional leaders\u2019 refusal to allow votes on overwhelmingly popular, bipartisan reforms,\u201d she continued. \u201cThis \u2018my way or the highway\u2019 approach needs to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Politico,\u00a0US Senate\u00a0Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told reporters on Thursday that he and House Speaker\u00a0Mike Johnson\u00a0(R-La.) discussed the short-term extension during a closed-door meeting the previous day.<\/p>\n
