(KOKH) — A bill that aims to give you more control over your personal data that companies have has been signed into law.

Senate Bill 546 made it across the finish line this session and was signed by Governor Stitt in March.

“It’s pretty much been kind of like the Wild West,” EMSCO Solutions Specialist and cybersecurity expert Ron Vaughn said.

Personal data that you enter on the internet is being stored by private companies.

“And then they really have been buying, selling, and sharing that information with each other,” Vaughn said. “They build up big targeted profiles so they can define you as a demographic portion for targeted advertising as one of the primary means it’s done.”

However, when Senate Bill 546 takes effect, Oklahomans will have more control over their data that certain companies have, like Amazon and Google.

The law will impact companies who operate in Oklahoma that either processes personal data of more than 100,000 consumers or processes data of 25,000 consumers while earning a majority of their revenue from selling data.

“The protections it gives you is it means you have a right to actually ask for what data they have for you and they have to give you access to it. And then you can correct it, you can get a copy of it, you can have them exported out into a portable format so you can take it somewhere else if you want to, or you can have them delete it. And you can say that you do not wanna be part of any targeted advertising,” Vaughn told FOX 25.

For years, it’s an effort State Sen. Brent Howard (R-Altus) has been working on alongside State Rep. Josh West (R-Grove).

“We would have been one of the first in the nation to adopt a data privacy law. Instead, by the time we got it passed this year, we were the 25th in the nation to get it adopted,” Howard said.

Lawmakers were looking to strike the right balance.

“There are some other states that have a lot more expansive, they have private rights action, and some few things that…

Source

Data privacy law to take effect in Oklahoma next January https://okcfox.com/news/local/data-privacy-law-to-take-effect-in-oklahoma-next-january-oklahoma-politics-ron-vaughn-brent-howard-senate-bill-546 Publish Date: 2026-05-01 18:34:00…

https://okcfox.com/resources/media2/16x9/753/1320/7x0/90/cdcb0d5a-dcf8-48e7-9e46-3f3eef74eace-Screenshot20260501145628.png
[16

post-238058","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-privacy
