The upcoming Android 17 will fix issues where apps fail to adjust to different screen sizes. As such, apps will behave consistently across different types of Android devices.

Google could finally solve Android’s large-screen app problem

Normally, when you open an app on the cover display of a foldable phone and then switch to the larger inner screen, the app should adjust its layout. Of course, this already happens with some popular apps, but many apps are still stuck in the same format. This makes the experience look incomplete and less smooth.

In Android 15, apps followed developer-defined rules in the manifest. For example, if the developer set the app to fixed orientation, the system did not override it on larger screens. Simply put, they stayed in slab (standard) phone-style and did not use the extra screen space.

With Android 16, Google changed that approach. On larger screens, the system started ignoring developer-set restrictions and pushed apps to resize. However, developers still had the option to opt out, so the issue was not completely solved.

Thankfully, Android 17 could take a much stricter approach. The next-gen OS can override older manifest settings completely for apps targeting API 37. This means opt-out flags may no longer work. The system will run the app in full-screen mode to fit the display area.

However, there are still some exceptions. Apps in the game category may be allowed to retain control over orientation. This is understandable because games often depend on fixed screen ratios. Anyway, the overall Android experience for users of larger devices should definitely improve with this move.

Google may debut the final version of Android 17 around mid-2026, paving the way for OEMs to push the new software to their…

Source

Android 17 Tackles App Layout Issues on Foldables and Tablets https://sammyguru.com/android-17-tackles-app-layout-issues-on-foldables-and-tablets/ Publish Date: 2026-05-01 05:19:00…

[46
70
post-237778","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-android","tag-google
