A mysterious piece of sabotage-focused malware<\/p>\n

known as FAST16 has after many years<\/p>\n

finally been deciphered.<\/p>\n

It’s a piece of code designed to silently tamper with<\/p>\n

and corrupt calculations and research<\/p>\n

and engineering software.<\/p>\n

This malware seems to have been created by the US<\/p>\n

or an ally,<\/p>\n

and it may have been used against Iran’s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

It also rewrites the entire history<\/p>\n

of state-sponsored cyber sabotage operations as we know it.<\/p>\n

Let’s start at the beginning.<\/p>\n

Fast16 first came to light in April, 2017,<\/p>\n

when the hacker group known as Shadow Brokers<\/p>\n

leaked a vast collection of NSA tools.<\/p>\n

One of those tools appeared designed to help NSA operators<\/p>\n

who were hacking into networks around the world<\/p>\n

avoid conflicts with other hacking operations.<\/p>\n

That program merely notes for Fast16,<\/p>\n

Nothing to see here, carry on,<\/p>\n

strongly suggesting FAST16 was created by the US<\/p>\n

or an allied country.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t until 2019 that cybersecurity researcher,<\/p>\n

Juan Andres Guerrero-Saade found the actual code for FAST16<\/p>\n

which dates back to 2005.<\/p>\n

That means it was created even before the legendary Stuxnet,<\/p>\n

malware that the US<\/p>\n

and Israel deployed against Iran in 2007<\/p>\n

to silently accelerate nuclear enrichment centrifuges<\/p>\n

until they destroyed themselves.<\/p>\n

It still took another seven years to figure out<\/p>\n

what Fast16 actually did.<\/p>\n

Now, Guerrero-Saade<\/p>\n

and his colleague, Vitaly Kamluk,<\/p>\n

at cybersecurity firm SentinelOne say they’ve cracked it.<\/p>\n

Fast16 was designed to carry out the most subtle form<\/p>\n

of sabotage ever seen in a malware tool found in the wild.<\/p>\n

This malware can, according to researchers,<\/p>\n

automatically spread within a network<\/p>\n

and silently alter the results of programs<\/p>\n

that perform high-precision mathematical calculations<\/p>\n

and simulate physical phenomena<\/p>\n

while remaining almost undetectable.<\/p>\n

Through these invisible manipulations,<\/p>\n

Fast16 can cause failures<\/p>\n

that range from faulty research results<\/p>\n

to catastrophic damage to real world equipment.<\/p>\n

The researcher’s analysis of the tool<\/p>\n

has produced an unconfirmed, but still tantalizing theory<\/p>\n
