As Elon University continues work to\u00a0integrate artificial intelligence on campus,\u00a0professors and students have varying\u00a0degrees of adoption. Elon junior Emmaline\u00a0Cousins, a public health major, said she\u00a0frequently uses AI in her personal life but\u00a0avoids using it for the majority of her school\u00a0work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think using it in a way of researching\u00a0health topics is not the best way to use AI,\u00a0because it\u2019s a chat box telling you information\u00a0based on the algorithm,\u201d Cousins said. \u201cBut\u00a0outlining things or formatting emails is a\u00a0good way to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cousins is taking the class PSY 3704:\u00a0Psychology of Adolescence and Emerging\u00a0Adulthood taught by Sarah Bunnell,\u00a0an associate professor of psychology.\u00a0In Bunnell\u2019s syllabus for PSY 3704 she\u00a0outlines the accepted use of AI for each\u00a0type of assignment, which is limited to\u00a0brainstorming and image generation for\u00a0case studies and a self-concept map.<\/p>\n

While most assignments in Bunnell\u2019s\u00a0class do not allow AI usage, Bunnell said\u00a0this is done to make sure students are\u00a0properly engaging with course content.\u00a0Bunnell recognizes that AI can be a tool\u00a0to facilitate learning, and said all AI use\u00a0must be disclosed according to American\u00a0Psychological Association guidelines.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the key learning objectives is to\u00a0learn \u2018how do I apply really complicated\u00a0frameworks and theories to myself and\u00a0others,\u2019\u201d Bunnell said. \u201cDoing the work of actual application and thinking about\u00a0yourself when doing written reflections,\u00a0that\u2019s critical. That can\u2019t be outsourced.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Elon\u2019s Generative AI\u00a0Statement published by the Office of the\u00a0Provost, Elon University sees generative AI\u00a0as a tool for enhancing \u2014 but not replacing\u00a0\u2014 teaching and learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
