Australian scientists have developed an\u00a0injectable therapy\u00a0that helps clear blocked airways in flat-faced dogs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Biotechnology company\u00a0Snoretox\u00a0and\u00a0RMIT University\u00a0have\u00a0shown early success using\u00a0the first\u00a0therapy\u00a0from\u00a0a new technology, known as\u00a0Snoretox-1.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

The collaboration\u00a0tested the\u00a0therapy\u00a0on bulldogs with breathing difficulties caused by\u00a0a\u00a0common\u00a0condition\u00a0in\u00a0flat-faced dogs\u00a0that restricts airflow, known\u00a0as\u00a0brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Almost\u00a0half of all Pugs, French and British Bulldogs\u00a0are affected,\u00a0impacting\u00a0their ability to breathe, eat, exercise and sleep,\u00a0according to\u00a0Snoretox\u00a0Managing\u00a0Director\u202fand RMIT\u00a0Adjunct\u00a0Professor Tony Sasse.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDecades of selective breeding\u00a0for\u00a0the popular flat-faced\u00a0appearance have\u00a0unfortunately led to serious\u00a0breathing problems,\u201d he said.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn\u00a0severe cases, the condition\u00a0has\u00a0been shown to shorten a dog\u2019s life by\u00a0up to\u00a0four years.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Successful\u00a0early\u00a0results\u202fin\u00a0affected dogs\u00a0<\/h3>\n

The early-stage trial\u00a0involved\u00a0six bulldogs with severe\u00a0symptoms\u00a0that struggled\u00a0to complete\u00a0a\u00a0three-minute walk\u00a0but were able to do so far more easily after receiving\u00a0the patented Snoretox-1 treatment,\u00a0with noticeably reduced breathing noise and effort.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first published results of the study in\u00a0The Veterinary Journal\u00a0show how all six dogs\u00a0displayed visible\u00a0improvements and were able to complete a brisk walk\u00a0that\u00a0was previously difficult.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Surgery to widen the nostrils and remove excessive throat tissue, along with weight-management strategies,\u00a0are\u00a0currently the\u00a0main\u00a0treatment\u00a0options available, but outcomes vary.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cResearch shows that\u00a0up to\u00a060\u00a0per\u00a0cent of affected dogs still\u00a0experience breathing\u00a0problems after surgery, and\u00a0seven\u00a0per cent\u00a0do not survive\u00a0the procedure,\u201d Sasse said.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sasse said the bulldog trial results\u00a0suggested\u00a0a\u00a0possible\u00a0combination\u00a0with, or\u00a0alternative\u00a0to,\u00a0surgery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
