OpenAI<\/span> has reportedly committed up to $1.5 billion for its private equity (PE) venture.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to a <\/span>report<\/span> Wednesday (April 22) from the Financial Times (FT), which characterizes the move as part of the startup\u2019s plan to overtake chief competitor <\/span>Anthropic<\/span> in the race to sell artificial intelligence (AI) tools to businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sources with knowledge of the matter told the FT that OpenAI will contribute an initial $500 million in its equity into the joint venture, with the option to add another $1 billion later.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The venture will be <\/span>valued at $10 billion<\/span> as part of a funding round expected to close early next month, the sources said. OpenAI\u2019s PE plans had been reported by Reuters in March. Additional reporting said the company has <\/span>reassigned<\/span> its chief operating officer to oversee the project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Investors such as <\/span>TPG<\/span>, <\/span>Bain Capital<\/span>, <\/span>Advent International<\/span>, <\/span>Brookfield<\/span> and <\/span>Goanna Capital<\/span> will invest an additional $4 billion, sources told the FT. The private equity backers will invest for five years, and OpenAI has promised them an annual 17.5% return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat is a floor\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. but we expect it to be much higher,\u201d said a person with knowledge of the plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new venture \u201cgenerates revenue by being the best in the world at AI deployment, at rewiring businesses. If we\u2019re very early in this cycle [of AI adoption], then that\u2019s a very valuable asset,\u201d that source said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The FT had reported earlier this month that Anthropic was <\/span>gaining on OpenAI<\/span> as more businesses adopt its tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The report cited figures from payments company Ramp showing Anthropic increasing its share of enterprise customers, while OpenAI\u2019s business adoption levels were flat. OpenAI has disputed the FT\u2019s findings.<\/span><\/p>\n

The news follows a recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report saying OpenAI was working with consulting firms to sell companies on its <\/span>coding product<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
