Arch Linux’s decision falls squarely into this category. Since the announcement on December 20, 2025, the following applies: With the switch to the NVIDIA driver branch 590, Pascal GPUs from the GTX 10 series and older models will no longer be supported by the standard driver path. At the same time, Arch is replacing the previous main packages with variants featuring Open Kernel Modules for newer cards.

This is not a distribution’s whim, but the logical consequence of NVIDIA’s own support plan. NVIDIA itself states that the Linux 580 Legacy series is the final driver line for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta GPUs. Support for new Linux kernels and X servers, as well as critical bug fixes, will continue for these generations within their respective support lifecycles, but no longer as part of the normal progression of new major branches like 590. For GeForce cards based on these architectures, only quarterly security updates will continue through October 2028. Arch describes the practical transition quite matter-of-factly: Users running Turing and newer architectures will be automatically switched to the open-source kernel modules during upgrades. Those still using a GTX 1060, 1070, 1080, or related Pascal card, however, must actively switch to older driver paths. Tom’s Hardware specifically points to the older nvidia-580xx-dkms package as a temporary solution. This isn’t the end of the road for the card, but it is the end of convenience. And convenience is often what makes a system suitable for everyday use—or a nightmare—under Linux.

The bigger point, however, is another: With AMD, many older GPUs often perform comparatively well under Linux because open-source community support continues to grow over the years. With older NVIDIA cards, it’s more complicated….

Source

[48
99,71,57,61
post-233697","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-linux","tag-arch-linux","tag-linux","tag-security","tag-security-updates
