Springfield\u2019s municipal utility earned top honors for drinking water quality after City Water, Light and Power placed first in a regional taste test, according to a community announcement.<\/p>\n

CWLP won the Illinois Section of the American Water Works Association District 3 competition, which evaluated water samples on clarity, taste and odor. The win in the Central Illinois regional event qualifies the utility to advance to the statewide contest scheduled for April.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to be recognized for our high-quality water,\u201d Todd LaFountain, CWLP\u2019s water division manager, said according to the announcement. He credited plant operators, chemists and treatment and distribution staff for maintaining a safe and reliable water supply for Springfield.<\/p>\n

The City of Springfield has provided public drinking water since 1868, making it the state\u2019s second waterworks system in operation at the time, according to the announcement. The city first pumped untreated water from the Sangamon River on April 30, 1868, and began full-time service on July 1 of that year.<\/p>\n

Today, CWLP\u2019s water division supplies drinking water to about 150,000 people in Springfield and surrounding communities. The system includes Lake Springfield, an upgraded lakeside water purification plant, three water storage tanks and roughly 760 miles of water mains, according to the announcement.<\/p>\n

CWLP officials said the division\u2019s primary mission is to ensure customers have a safe and dependable water supply now and in the future.<\/p>\n
