\"\"The Information Commissioner\u2019s Office is calling on parents to treat their children\u2019s online privacy like road safety and stranger danger as part of a major new campaign designed to \u201cstart simple conversations about protecting their personal information online\u201d.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

The \u201cSwitched on to Privacy Campaign\u201d has also triggered calls from the children\u2019s commissioner for England Dame Rachel de Souza to not to let tech companies \u201coff the hook\u201d and force them to prioritise children\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

The move coincides with the publication of new research which reveals three-quarters of parents fear their child cannot make safe online privacy choices, with over a third (35%) believing their child would \u201cshare personal information in exchange for game tokens or rewards\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

The study, which quizzed 1,000 UK parents with children aged four to 11 years, also found that 22% of children have shared personal information such as health details with AI tools and 24% have shared their real name or address online, with eight and nine-year-olds most at risk.\n<\/p>\n

While the most obvious elements include children\u2019s name, age, and where they live, the ICO is warning parents that revealing browsing history, purchases, photos, voice notes and social media or gaming activity is just as potentially damaging.\n<\/p>\n

The regulator said a single click could \u201cunveil friendships, interests, moods and even sleep patterns, creating a digital footprint that can last forever \u2013 or even be exploited by people with bad intentions\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

It added that \u201cmany parents feel underprepared\u201d, with 46% of survey respondents stating they \u201cdon\u2019t feel confident protecting their children\u2019s privacy online\u201d, 44% \u201ctry but aren\u2019t sure they\u2019re doing enough\u201d and 42% \u201cprobably don\u2019t spend enough time checking their child\u2019s privacy settings\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
