There\u2019s a version of the Linux story where everything clicks\u2014and you wonder how you ever used Windows. There\u2019s another where it just becomes a second partition you never boot into. Which one ends up being your story depends largely on how honestly you answer these five questions.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re switching to Linux, I\u2019m going to assume you\u2019ve spent years on Windows (or macOS). You\u2019ve built up muscle memory, mental shortcuts, and an entire way of navigating a computer. Linux is going to disrupt some\u2014if not most\u2014of that.<\/p>\n

For example, you probably install software by visiting different websites and downloading EXE files. On Linux, you can find executable app installers, but that\u2019s not the preferred approach and can pose security risks. The default method is to install software through package managers, which you can access via the terminal or a graphical software store\u2014similar to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.<\/p>\n

Also, if you spend a lot of time managing files, you\u2019ll need to get familiar with the Linux directory structure. There are no lettered drives like the C: or D: drive. Linux organizes everything under a single root directory (\/).<\/p>\n

Now, I\u2019m not saying Linux is harder than Windows (or macOS)\u2014but it is different. Your new Linux PC may not behave the way you expect, and you\u2019ll need to learn how to use it. Yes, there are beginner-friendly distros designed to ease the transition, but they only soften the learning curve\u2014they don\u2019t eliminate it. If you expect Linux to mirror your Windows workflows, you\u2019re going to be disappointed.<\/p>\n
