The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning to smartphone users about potential data security risks linked to widely used mobile applications, particularly those developed overseas.<\/p>\n

The agency said certain apps may collect extensive personal information once permissions are granted, including access to contact lists, device data and user activity. In some cases, this data could be stored on servers outside the United States.<\/p>\n

While the FBI did not name specific platforms, analysts suggest the advisory could apply to popular apps such as Shein, CapCut, Temu and Lemon8, all of which have significant user bases globally.<\/p>\n

According to the agency, some applications may continue collecting data even when not actively in use. This could include persistent access to personal information across the device, raising concerns about the scale and scope of data harvesting.<\/p>\n

The FBI also highlighted that the risks are not limited to users who have downloaded such apps. If individuals grant access to their contacts, information about friends, family members or colleagues, including names, phone numbers and email addresses, could also be collected and stored.<\/p>\n

To help users identify potential risks, the agency pointed to warning signs such as unusual battery drain, spikes in mobile data usage and unexplained account activity following the installation of an app.<\/p>\n

The FBI has advised users to exercise caution when downloading applications, limit permissions to only what is necessary and rely on official app stores for installations. It also warned against sideloading apps from third-party websites, noting that these may carry malware designed to extract sensitive data.<\/p>\n
