I mentioned one of the obvious problems with the sequence\u2014the lack of attempts made to fix David before abandoning him\u2014but I only alluded to the main issue because the subject is surprisingly complicated. <\/p>\n<p>The forest scene itself is just shy of three minutes, and the actors both do a wonderful job selling the scene, but in the end, I couldn\u2019t buy it. This scene is meant to bring the audience to tears, but I only felt confused and a little irritated. It\u2019s taken multiple attempts at writing down my thoughts to really articulate why.<\/p>\n<p>To grasp what went wrong during this scene, I must first rewind a bit and discuss what we\u2019ve seen thus far. The basic issue is that there are multiple conflicting plot points coming to a head here. This makes for a very confusing scene, despite the actors\u2019 tears. First, we must begin by remembering two elements: the film\u2019s thesis statement and the\u00a0bait-and-switch\u00a0being used to sneak that thesis into the audience\u2019s brains. <\/p>\n<p>The real message of the movie is \u201cNobody knows what \u2018real\u2019 really means.\u201d Remember, this is Teddy\u2019s line at the end of\u00a0Brian Aldiss\u2019s\u00a0short story,\u00a0Super-Toys Last All Summer Long. As the movie progresses, the clear anti-God narrative becomes apparent, so the word \u201creal\u201d is, both in the short story and in the movie, serving as a placeholder for the concept of endowed value. <\/p>\n<p>In other words, if the word \u201creal\u201d doesn\u2019t matter, then endowed value doesn\u2019t exist. If \u201creal\u201d has no objective meaning, then neither does human value.
