{"id":229279,"date":"2026-03-30T13:38:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T17:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/30\/ftc-can-do-better-on-age-assurance-say-privacy-rights-groups\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T14:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T18:15:09","slug":"ftc-can-do-better-on-age-assurance-say-privacy-rights-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/30\/ftc-can-do-better-on-age-assurance-say-privacy-rights-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"FTC can do better on age assurance, say privacy rights\u2019 groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biometricupdate.com\/202603\/ftc-can-do-better-on-age-assurance-say-privacy-rights-groups\">FTC can do better on age assurance, say privacy rights\u2019 groups<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biometricupdate.com\/202603\/ftc-can-do-better-on-age-assurance-say-privacy-rights-groups\">https:\/\/www.biometricupdate.com\/202603\/ftc-can-do-better-on-age-assurance-say-privacy-rights-groups<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Publish Date: <a href=\"publish_date]\">2026-03-30 13:38:00<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source Domain: <a href=\"www.biometricupdate.com\">www.biometricupdate.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A group of privacy organizations is lobbying for \u201cstronger, privacy-protective age assurance standards\u201d in the U.S. and calling for the Federal Trade Commission to revise its enforcement policy statement on age verification under the Children\u2019s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).<\/p>\n<p>A release from the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD), the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), and Fairplay says the groups have sent a letter to the FTC arguing that its statement \u201csets a weak federal floor for age verification data practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it is concerned that the FTC \u201csidesteps COPPA\u2019s core protection of requiring parental consent for data collection by allowing operators of mixed audience or general audience websites or online services to collect personal information from every user, including children, without parental consent in order to determine which users are children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the policy statement\u2019s security standards for sensitive data are weaker than the FTC\u2019s own rules and guidance, and it \u201csets the bar for third-party oversight below the FTC\u2019s own established standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The groups also cite weakened data retention and deletion requirements, failure to prevent bias against different demographic groups, and an overly broad definition of age verification as concerns.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>FTC letting Big Tech get away with egregious data collection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe standards the FTC sets now will shape how age verification is implemented nationwide for years to come, whether to comply with COPPA or other frameworks,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cIt is therefore essential that the Commission get this right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katharina Kopp, director of policy for the Center for Digital Democracy, says the problem has never been identifying who\u2019s a child. \u201cIt\u2019s that identifying children creates obligations companies want to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost major platforms, like Meta and Google, already know which of their users are children.
