LOS ANGELES\u00a0\u2014 Jurors in California found Meta and Google liable for harming a young woman’s mental health when she was a minor.<\/p>\n

The outcome of a trial that ended on Wednesday could have implications for a case close to home.<\/p>\n

Bradyn\u00a0Bohn is listed in a new lawsuit against Meta. The Wisconsin teen died by suicide a year ago after becoming the victim of sexual extortion. His story and others like it led to legislation, now known as Bradyn’s Law, that increased penalties for perpetrators of the crime, often referred to as sextortion.<\/p>\n

His mom says accountability shouldn’t end there.<\/p>\n

“He was contacted by a predator on Meta’s app who then had access to his friends and family, and being a minor account, they shouldn’t have had access to that,\u00a0Brittney Bird, Bradyn’s mother, said. “They’re not removing them.”<\/p>\n

The lawsuit accuses Meta of knowing accounts flagged as predators were being recommended to teen users and not doing anything about it. Bird says the California verdict is giving her hope. Meta plans to appeal that decision.<\/p>\n
