Apple Silicon has helped Apple make tremendous gains with laptops, but it\u2019s not as suitable for modular desktop computers, mostly because of the lack of upgradeable RAM and discrete graphics. So it is perhaps not surprising that the company today confirmed it is discontinuing the Mac Pro and will never offer a replacement.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no announcement. Instead, the Mac Pro has simply disappeared from Apple\u2019s website; if you try to visit the Mac Pro page on the site, it redirects to the main Mac page. And the company has responded to queries by confirming that it has discontinued the product.<\/p>\n

Those who still want a desktop Mac for some reason have three choices: The diminutive Mac Mini, which is still stuck on previous-generation M4 chips, the Mac Studio, a super-expensive but non-expandable Mac with older M3 Ultra and M4 Max chips, or the all-in-one iMac, which provides just a single 24-inch display option and is still using previous-generation M4 chips. Those who want Apple\u2019s latest and most powerful M5-series chips will need to look at the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptop families.<\/p>\n

In some ways, this isn\u2019t surprising. Apple launched an Intel-based Mac Pro in 2019 and sold configurations that could cost $6000 all the way up to $50,000. But its Apple Silicon-based successor didn\u2019t arrive until the M2 generation, in 2023, and though it did at least offer PCIe expansion slots, the RAM and graphics were not upgradeable because of the integrated design of Apple\u2019s chips. Prices started at $6999, and the Mac Studio was, at the time, a better deal for most power users.<\/p>\n

In late 2025, Mark Gurman reported that Apple had put the Mac Pro \u201con the back burner\u201d and had \u201clargely written off\u201d the product line. \u201cThe sentiment internally is that the Mac Studio now represents both the present and future of Apple\u2019s professional desktop strategy,\u201d he wrote at the time.<\/p>\n
