Despite decades of progress and near-universal CISO adoption in Fortune 500 and Global 2000 organizations, there are still only\u00a035,000 CISOs worldwide\u00a0serving an estimated 359 million businesses.<\/p>\n<p>As Sophos CEO Joe Levy notes in the report, that imbalance represents a 10,000:1 business-to-CISO ratio: \u201cThose are not good odds. This is a market failure. [The cybersecurity ecosystem] hasn\u2019t figured out how to address this gap. We have the potential to do that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For large organizations, the CISO role has become foundational to risk management and operational continuity. For everyone else \u2014 particularly SMBs \u2014 the absence of CISO-level leadership has opened a widening vulnerability gap.<\/p>\n<p>This new report places the CISO leadership gap against the backdrop of a rapidly escalating threat environment.\u00a0Cybercrime costs are projected to reach $12.2 trillion annually by 2031, doubling from 2021 levels.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sophos: Defeat Cyberattacks with Cybersecurity as a Service\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tri7ceyQBms?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that\u00a0ransomware alone will cost victims $74 billion in 2026, climbing to $275 billion annually by 2031, with estimates stating that attackers launch a new campaign every two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The consequences for organizations without expert oversight are severe.
