Since their arrival aboard the International Space Station on 14\u00a0February 2026, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot and NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway have\u00a0already\u00a0carried out\u00a0two\u00a0sessions of\u00a0EchoFinder, an experiment\u00a0developed by\u00a0the French space agency\u00a0CNES\u00a0for the\u00a0\u03b5psilon\u00a0mission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

EchoFinder\u00a0tackles a simple yet crucial\u00a0challenge\u00a0for the future of\u00a0human\u00a0space\u00a0exploration: how can astronauts perform a reliable ultrasound scan\u00a0without\u00a0medical\u00a0training\u202fand without\u00a0real-time\u00a0support\u00a0from\u00a0a\u00a0doctor?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\tESA astronaut Sophie Adenot is seen preparing for an EchoFinder session<\/p>\n

EchoFinder\u202fis a software assistant\u00a0that combines\u00a0augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The\u00a0augmented\u00a0reality\u00a0interface guides the astronaut by showing exactly where to\u00a0position\u00a0the\u00a0ultrasound\u00a0probe\u00a0on the body. Once the probe is\u00a0correctly placed, an artificial intelligence system takes over to\u00a0identify\u00a0the organs\u00a0and\u00a0record\u00a0the images.\u00a0In\u00a0the\u00a0future, these images\u00a0would\u00a0be\u00a0sent\u00a0to\u00a0medical teams\u00a0on Earth for diagnosis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This technology was developed with\u00a0upcoming\u00a0space missions in mind,\u00a0where communication\u00a0delays\u00a0would\u00a0make remote\u00a0assistance\u00a0from a specialist impossible.\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0promising applications\u00a0on Earth,\u00a0for example\u00a0on\u00a0ships at sea,\u00a0in\u00a0submarines, or in remote areas without immediate access to medical\u00a0expertise.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Among the mission\u2019s\u00a0thirty-six\u00a0European experiments,\u00a0seven\u00a0French\u00a0experiments, including\u00a0EchoFinder, were developed\u00a0by\u00a0CADMOS, the\u00a0centre\u202ffor the development of microgravity applications and space operations at\u00a0CNES.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
