NASHVILLE, Tenn (WZTV) \u2014 <\/span>Two Tennessee lawmakers have introduced legislation aimed at creating safety and transparency requirements for artificial intelligence systems, particularly those used by children.<\/p>\n

The proposal, called the Artificial Intelligence Public Safety and Child Protection Transparency Act, was introduced by Ken Yager, a Republican state senator from Kingston, and Jason Zachary, a Republican state representative from Knoxville and deputy speaker of the Tennessee House.<\/p>\n

The bill, filed as HB 1898 and SB 2171, would require large developers of artificial intelligence technology to evaluate potential risks associated with their systems and put safety measures in place. It would also require companies to report serious safety incidents to authorities.<\/p>\n

Supporters say the measure is designed to address concerns about how advanced AI systems could affect children and families. Yager said the legislation reflects growing concerns among parents about the role artificial intelligence may play in young people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

According to a February 2026 poll of 503 likely Tennessee voters conducted by Anchor Research, 88% of respondents said they support legislation requiring AI developers to implement safety and security protocols related to potential risks and child safety. The poll also found that 90% of respondents said it is important for the state to have laws aimed at protecting children from AI-related harms.<\/p>\n

The legislation comes as courts across the country consider several lawsuits involving artificial intelligence chatbots and minors. In one case filed in 2025, a family alleged a chatbot from OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT gave instructions related to self-harm to their teenage son. In another lawsuit filed in 2024, a parent alleged a chatbot created by Character.AI contributed to harmful behavior before the death of a 14-year-old.<\/p>\n
