Janet Mills said she does not support a key carveout approved last week by Senate Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Democrats approved an exemption from the regulations for political parties, citing potential First Amendment issues.<\/p>\n<p>But on Tuesday, Mills told reporters that she \u201cwasn\u2019t excited\u201d about the exemption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the fix is good enough for the political\u00a0parties,\u00a0then the fix ought to be good enough for all the businesses affected as well,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mills\u00a0said she did not know if she would veto the bill if it\u00a0contained\u00a0the political\u00a0party\u00a0exemption but said\u00a0she\u2019d\u00a0like to see a compromise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to see them come to the middle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. (Spectrum News\/Susan Cover)<\/p>\n<p>The bill, LD 1822,\u00a0seeks to limit data collected on the internet to better protect consumer privacy, said Sen. Anne Carney (D-Cape Elizabeth), the bill\u2019s\u00a0co-sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt their most dangerous, the large amounts of data collected in every click and swipe leaves us vulnerable to identity theft, financial exploitation, civil rights violations and unlawful discrimination,\u201d she said during the Senate debate on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>For more than three years, state lawmakers have grappled with how to best protect personal information while still allowing companies that use data in their marketing to target customers.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. David\u00a0Haggan\u00a0(R-Hampden) read\u00a0a long list\u00a0of businesses opposed to the legislation during the Senate debate, including LL Bean, Portland Sea Dogs, Hollywood\u00a0Casino\u00a0and the Maine Auto Dealers Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t remember the last time when all of our business community banded together to oppose a\u00a0bill\u00a0they say will make Maine an island and our commerce environment a pariah,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Senate\u00a0Democrats\u00a0passed the bill 20-14.
