Whether you’re new to Linux or a veteran who’s simply moved along with the times, sometimes it’s worth taking a look back to see how far we’ve come. These three distros let you relive the past and re-experience the classics that shaped everything we use today.

Ubuntu Unity: The workflow that made me fall in love with Linux

It looked like nothing else—and that was exactly the point

I started using Linux back in 2015 with Ubuntu as my first distro—and Unity as its desktop environment. It was my first exposure to Linux, and honestly, Unity’s unique workflow and overall aesthetics are what made me fall in love with Linux and eventually switch for good.

Coming from Windows, the two-panel layout was completely new to me. I knew macOS had a similar layout, and in theory, it always felt like a waste of space—especially since modern monitors have limited vertical room, and you’re using some of it for bars at the top and bottom. However, Unity only had a thin top bar, so vertical space was mostly preserved, while all the pinned and running apps lived in the left-hand panel—not in a bottom dock.

Now, the benefit of having two panels instead of a single taskbar (like on Windows) is that you have extra space to show more information—and having a global app menu is an excellent use of that space. A dedicated area that displays all the menu options for the currently active app is super convenient.

Speaking of app menus, Unity’s most powerful feature was undoubtedly the HUD, or Heads-Up Display—a search bar that lets you type any menu action from the app you have open and execute it instantly. It even learned your most-used commands over time and prioritized them in the results.

Then there was the…

Source

These 3 classic Linux distros are a blast from the past https://www.howtogeek.com/classic-linux-distros-are-a-blast-from-the-past/ Publish Date: 2026-03-10…

https://static0.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2025/08/3d-illustration-of-tux-the-linux-penguin-mascot-depicted-as-an-elderly-figure-with-a-white-beard-glasses-and-a-cane-standing-in-front-of-a-display-showcasing-some-linux-distros.png?w=1600&h=900&fit=crop
[48
71,79
post-221992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-linux","tag-linux","tag-ubuntu
