Meta faces a new lawsuit over AI-powered smart glasses and privacy after Swedish publications conducted an investigation showing that workers at a Kenyan subcontractor reviewed footage of customers that contained sensitive content: nudity, sexual scenes, and toilet use.<\/p>\n

The company claimed that faces in the images are blurred, but sources doubt that the blurring works consistently. The investigation also prompted a probe by the UK\u2019s Information Commissioner\u2019s Office (ICO).<\/p>\n

A lawsuit has also been filed in the United States. In a recent complaint, plaintiffs Gina Barton of New Jersey and Mateo Kanu of California, who are acting through Clarkson Law Firm, accuse Meta of violating privacy laws and engaging in false advertising.<\/p>\n

The complaint alleges that Meta\u2019s smart glasses are marketed with promises like \u201cdesigned for privacy, control over you\u201d and \u201cbuilt with your privacy in mind,\u201d which could create a misleading impression among consumers that the eyewear footage, including intimate moments, is reviewed by workers overseas. The plaintiffs note that the marketing lacks warnings or information that would contradict the stated privacy standards.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit accuses Meta and its manufacturing partner Luxottica of America of violating consumer protection laws.<\/p>\n

According to Clarkson Law Firm, in 2025 more than seven million people purchased Meta\u2019s smart glasses, meaning their footage is fed into a data stream for review, and users cannot opt out of the process.<\/p>\n

Meta says that when users share content with Meta AI, the company engages contractors to review this information in order to improve the glasses\u2019 user experience. This is explained in the privacy policy and Terms of Use, though there may not be exact language publicly, and individual checks reveal aspects within the company\u2019s AI Terms of Use.<\/p>\n
