The new head of Britain\u2019s foreign intelligence service MI6 has warned the nation in her first public speech that the UK is \u201cnow operating in a space between peace and war\u201d and \u201cthe front line is everywhere,\u201d amid growing tensions with Russia.<\/p>\n

Blaise Metreweli became the first female chief of the Secret Intelligence Service\u2019s 116-year history when she took up her post this fall. Commonly referred to as \u201cC,\u201d the chief is the only publicly named member of the famously secretive organization.<\/p>\n

In a speech at MI6 HQ in London on Monday, Metreweli highlighted the acute threat posed by Russia, and called out Moscow\u2019s attempts to \u201cbully, fearmonger and manipulate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all continue to face the menace of an aggressive, expansionist and revisionist Russia, seeking to subjugate Ukraine and harass NATO \u2026 (Putin) is dragging out negotiations and shifting the cost of war onto his own population,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Emphasizing the need to master new technology, Metreweli said recent advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnology and quantum computing could converge to create \u201cscience-fiction-like tools\u201d which could be used as perilous weapons.<\/p>\n

The chief previously led the service\u2019s technology and innovation teams, a position made famous as \u201cQ\u201d in the James Bond movies.<\/p>\n

From AI-powered robots that could have devastating impacts on the battlefield, to algorithims that could \u201cbecome as powerful as states,\u201d the new spy chief warned of the need to harness \u201cevery byte of data\u201d for the UK\u2019s strategic advantage.<\/p>\n

She also highlighted the increasingly complex landscape of threats facing the UK, which is being contested \u201cfrom sea to space \u2026 battlefield to the boardroom. And even our brains, as disinformation manipulates our understanding of each other and ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
