The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) has fined the leading high school media and technology company PlayOn Sports $1.1 million for not allowing users to easily opt-out of tracking technologies. <\/p>\n

PlayOn Sports also has been ordered to change its privacy and opt-out practices, according to a CPPA press release. <\/p>\n

The CPPA alleges that PlayOn Sports collected students’ personal data and delivered targeted advertising by using tracking technologies without providing a \u201csufficient way to opt out.\u201d <\/p>\n

All PlayOn Sports users were affected by the practice, including large numbers of high school students nationwide, CPPA said in its order, which was issued Friday but announced Tuesday. <\/p>\n

PlayOn Sports users were forced to click \u201cagree\u201d to the tracking, CPPA said, or they could not use tickets they had paid for or view the company\u2019s websites. <\/p>\n

The company told users to opt-out via the Network Advertising Initiative and the Digital Advertising Alliance, CPPA said, a practice which broke California law requiring firms to provide their own tool for consumers to opt-out. PlayOn Sports also did not clearly tell consumers its privacy practices, CPPA said. <\/p>\n

PlayOn Sports\u2019 GoFan platform is used nationwide to sell digital tickets to high school sporting events, theater performances and dances. Students also use the platform to stream games and access statistics about teams and players. <\/p>\n

In California alone, about 1,400 schools use PlayOn Sports and the company is the \u201cofficial ticketing platform\u201d for the state\u2019s governing body for high school sports. <\/p>\n

PlayOn Sports did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

\u201cStudents trying to go to prom or a high school football game shouldn\u2019t have to leave their privacy rights at the door,\u201d Michael Macko, CPPA\u2019s head of enforcement, said in a statement. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t attend these events without showing your ticket, and you couldn\u2019t show your ticket without being tracked for advertising.\u201d <\/p>\n
