I’ve been running Linux on a laptop for several years now, and I even bought one that came with Linux preinstalled. I need Windows for barely anything anymore, but that didn’t happen without some effort and hard-learned lessons.<\/p>\n

While there’s a ton of documentation online about Linux, there’s no single entry-point into the ecosystem. You can start with Linux servers, with Linux desktops environments, in virtual machines, or even with online Linux distro testing. After moving most of my PC life to a Linux laptop (and a dual-boot PC tower), these are some of the most important lessons I learned about the journey away from Windows.<\/p>\n

\n Buying a Linux-first laptop has huge perks

\n Dedicated customer support is not to be overlooked
\n <\/h3>\n

When someone is running a Linux desktop on their computer, it’s most often because they overwrote Windows with Linux. If you can stomach the cost of a Linux-first laptop, though, there’s added value you may be overlooking: dedicated customer service.<\/p>\n

Most Linux distributions that you download to install on top of (or next to) Windows come with no customer support at all. Typically, I have to rely on either my own research or community forums and chat rooms to get help solving issues. Unfortunately, I’ve found some of these communities to be less than welcoming, and my requests for troubleshooting help have sometimes been ignored.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Linux-first retailers are motivated to make sure your experience is good. They typically provide customer service along with your purchase, meaning you can consult with someone who’s paid to help you rather than a group of anonymous forum members who may or may not have the time and energy for you. Kubuntu Focus is one example; I’ve had a good experience talking with them when I’ve had trouble with my Kubuntu Focus Ir14 laptop.<\/p>\n
