Anthropic<\/span> is planning legal action after the <\/span>Pentagon<\/span> designated the company a security risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>statement<\/span> from the artificial intelligence startup Friday (Feb. 27) came soon after the White House gave the company six months until it is cut off from government contracts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am directing every federal agency in the United States government to <\/span>immediately cease<\/span> all use of Anthropic\u2019s technology. We don\u2019t need it, we don\u2019t want it and will not do business with them again!\u201d the president said in a post on Truth Social.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthropic had <\/span>clashed<\/span> with the Department of War over its use of its Claude model for autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. The Pentagon is now calling Anthropic a supply-chain risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a post on X, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Anthropic had \u201cdelivered a <\/span>masterclass<\/span> in arrogance and betrayal\u201d after a deadline to reach an agreement closed Friday. Effective immediately, no Pentagon contractors or suppliers \u201cmay conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic,\u201d Hegseth added.<\/span><\/p>\n

(Nevertheless, Claude still played a role in the U.S. attack on Iran this weekend, according to a Wall Street Journal <\/span>report<\/span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthropic said it plans to challenge the government\u2019s decision in court.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. We will challenge any supply chain risk designation in court,\u201d the company wrote on its blog, adding that Hegseth had no authority to issue the supply chain risk designation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLegally, a supply chain risk designation\u2009\u2026 can only extend to the use of Claude as part of Department of War contracts \u2014 it cannot affect how contractors use Claude to serve other customers,\u201d…<\/span><\/p>\n
