As the business world comes to grips with artificial intelligence, the biggest risk may be one where those running the economy can’t possibly stay ahead. As AI systems become more complex,\u00a0humans\u00a0aren’t\u00a0able to\u00a0fully understand, predict, or control\u00a0them.\u00a0That inability to understand at a fundamental level where AI models are going in the coming years makes it harder for organizations\u00a0deploying\u00a0AI to\u00a0anticipate\u00a0risks and apply guardrails.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We’re fundamentally aiming at a moving target,”\u00a0said\u00a0Alfredo Hickman,\u00a0chief information security officer\u00a0at Obsidian\u00a0Security.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A recent experience Hickman had spending time with the founder of a company building core AI models left him shocked, he says, “when they told me that they\u00a0don’t\u00a0understand where this tech is going to be in the next year, two years, three years. … The technology developers themselves\u00a0don’t\u00a0understand and\u00a0don’t\u00a0know where this technology is going to be.”<\/p>\n

As\u00a0organizations connect AI systems to real-world\u00a0business operations\u00a0to approve\u00a0transactions, to write code, to interact with customers, and move data between\u00a0platforms, they are\u00a0encountering a growing\u00a0gap between how\u00a0they\u00a0expect these systems to\u00a0behave\u00a0and how they actually\u00a0perform\u00a0once deployed. They are quickly discovering that AI isn’t dangerous because it’s autonomous but because\u00a0it increases system complexity beyond human comprehension.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Autonomous systems\u00a0don’t\u00a0always fail loudly.\u00a0It’s\u00a0often silent failure at scale,”\u00a0said Noe Ramos, vice president of AI operations at\u00a0Agiloft, a company that offers software for contracts management.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When mistakes happen, she says, the damage can spread quickly, sometimes long before companies realize something is wrong.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

“It\u00a0could escalate\u00a0slightly to\u00a0aggressively, which is an operational drain, or\u00a0it could\u00a0update records with\u00a0small\u00a0inaccuracies,” Ramos said. “Those errors seem minor, but at\u00a0scale over weeks…<\/p>\n
