In a week marked by excessive snowfall and heavy tragedy, here’s at least one technological silver lining.<\/p>\n

Far out of cellular range, the six survivors of Tahoe’s deadliest slide in decades used iPhone’s Emergency Satellite feature to call for help.<\/p>\n

According to law enforcement officials, the contact was crucial in determining rescue strategy and feasability. iPhone’s satellite feature kicks in when users try to place an emergency call without cellular or WiFi service. Without a designated satellite phone, the group would have been on their own. <\/p>\n

Don O\u2019Keefe, Chief of Law Enforcement for the California Office of Emergency Services, said “one of my personnel was communicating with one of the guides over a four-hour period, giving information back to the Nevada sheriff\u2019s office and coordinating what rescues could be permitted,” according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n

In the backcountry, it’s normal for reception to drop out completely. In this case, that satellite link became a digital lifeline. <\/p>\n

How Emergency SOS via Satellite Works<\/h3>\n

Emergency SOS via satellite is available on iPhone 14 or later and on newer Apple Watch Ultra models. When a user attempts to contact emergency services without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the device prompts a short questionnaire to gather key details about the situation. The phone then guides the user to orient it toward a satellite, establishing a narrowband connection that can transmit text-based information to emergency dispatch.<\/p>\n

The feature is free for two years after activation on supported devices. In addition to Emergency SOS, satellite connectivity also allows users to send iMessages and SMS texts and share location data via Find My when off-grid.<\/p>\n

A Growing Pattern in the Backcountry<\/h3>\n
