Cybersecurity software stocks plummeted on Friday after Anthropic PBC introduced a new safety feature in its Claude AI model.<\/p>\n

CrowdStrike Holdings led the declines with an 8% drop, while Cloudflare Inc. fell 8.1%. Meanwhile, Zscaler dropped 5.5%, SailPoint declined 9.4%, and Okta Inc. fell 9.2%. The Global X Cybersecurity ETF dropped 4.9%, closing at its lowest level since November 2023.<\/p>\n

Anthropic stated that the new tool ‘scans codebases for security vulnerabilities and recommends targeted software patches for human review.’ The company noted that the update is currently available only as a limited research preview.<\/p>\n

The decline in cybersecurity stocks is another example of software stock sell-offs driven by concerns over AI competition. This anxiety has persisted for weeks, with the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF falling more than 23% year-to-date, on track for its largest quarterly decline since the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n

“The sell-off in software stocks has been steadily ongoing, and today security software stocks experienced a small-scale sell-off due to a piece of news,” said Dennis Dick, Chief Trader at Triple D Trading. “This kind of market is frightening for investors because prices continue to fall at the slightest sign of volatility. Caution is certainly warranted, as some previously thought software stocks were oversold, but they keep declining.”<\/p>\n

The sell-off was largely driven by new AI tools released by companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Alphabet. Investors are concerned that the ability of ‘atmospheric programming’ (i.e., AI-generated, modified, and debugged code) will enable users to create their own applications, thereby reducing demand for traditional products and pressuring the growth, profit margins, and pricing power of related companies.<\/p>\n
