Modern smartphones are more powerful than ever, but almost every Android brand plays it safe. The cost of creating a new smartphone is so high that experimenting rarely makes sense.<\/p>\n

But there was a time when tech companies tried wild innovations, and the only one that could rival Samsung in scale while also experimenting with designs like money was no object was LG.<\/p>\n

The early 2010s were the golden era of innovative smartphone designs. It felt like every other week we’d see a new phone from an established brand\u2014or a brand we’d never heard of before\u2014come out with a wild new phone that had some sort of quirk.<\/p>\n

Samsung had its fair share of quirky, experimental phones, like the Beam, S4 Zoom, Round, Note Edge (which only curved the right side of the screen), and Folder\u2014the Z Flip before the Z Flip.<\/p>\n

However, these models pale in comparison with what LG had to offer.<\/p>\n

One of the earliest examples of LG\u2019s weird innovations was the LG Optimus 3D, which had a “glasses-free 3D display”\u2014you didn\u2019t need those cinema-style 3D glasses to enjoy the phone\u2019s stereoscopic screen.<\/p>\n

Of course, you needed actual 3D content to take full advantage of the display. In addition to interface elements with 3D effects and support for 3D content from apps and games, LG added a dual rear camera system that captured photos from two slightly different angles to create a 3D effect.<\/p>\n

There were a few other 3D-enabled Android phones, like the HTC Evo 3D, but ultimately the idea never caught on.<\/p>\n
