SHREVEPORT, La. \u2013 I get it, we see these red dots telling us a software update is available all the time. It’s easy to ignore them, and frankly, most people do. But this one is different.<\/p>\n

It fixes something called a “zero-day exploit.” And while it sounds like something out of a spy movie, it’s very real.<\/p>\n

A zero-day vulnerability is a flaw in software that hackers discover before the company does. It’s called “zero day” because the company has zero days to fix it before the bad guys start exploiting it.<\/p>\n

This week, Apple released an emergency security update to patch one of those flaws.<\/p>\n

Think of it as a hidden back door that even Apple didn’t know was there. Hackers found it first.<\/p>\n

In highly targeted attacks, that kind of access can allow someone to read messages, view photos, track location, access contacts, install spyware, and even turn on the camera and microphone.<\/p>\n

Here’s the important part:<\/p>\n

Most zero-day attacks are used against specific high-profile targets. But once the vulnerability becomes public, others can try to copy it.<\/p>\n

So don’t ignore this update. If it’s available to you, install it. Turn on automatic updates so security patches install overnight. They are often more important than any new features we see in iOS updates.<\/p>\n

This applies to iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watch, Apple TV, even Vision Pro. In short, if it has an Apple logo on it, check for updates.<\/p>\n

Hackers count on people hitting “remind me later.”<\/p>\n
