Massachusetts Gov.\u00a0Maura Healey on Friday\u00a0announced that the state\u2019s 40,000 executive-branch employees will receive access to a ChatGPT-powered artificial intelligence assistant, a first for state government.<\/p>\n

Massachusetts\u00a0and OpenAI, ChatGPT\u2019s developer, deployed the generative artificial intelligence tool following a competitive procurement process, a news release said. Use of the AI assistant, the announcement continued, will will\u00a0be implemented\u00a0in phases across the executive branch, starting with the\u00a0Executive Office of Technology Services and Security, followed by other agencies.<\/p>\n

In Friday\u2019s announcement, Healey said the state\u2019s goal in using the technology is making government work better and faster for people: \u201cAI has the potential to transform how government works, which is why\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0excited to partner with OpenAI on this\u00a0AI Assistant,\u00a0which will\u00a0ensure a safe and secure environment for employees and improve\u00a0their\u00a0ability to deliver better service to the people of Massachusetts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tool will reportedly be housed within a walled-off, secure environment, to help protect state data and ensure that prompts don\u2019t train public AI models.\u00a0Use of the tool will be governed by terms and conditions set by the technology office\u2019s\u00a0privacy division and the state\u2019s other regularly updated AI policies.<\/p>\n

State Chief Information Officer Jason Snyder said the \u201csecure, governed tool\u201d will \u201cempower our employees with a secure, governed tool that can enhance service delivery while maintaining the highest standards for data privacy, security, and thoughtful, transparent usage of AI. Our focus is not just adopting\u00a0AI, but\u00a0doing so in a way that reflects our values, and strengthens trust with the residents we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

In conjunction with the rollout,\u00a0the state said it will offer a series of\u00a0optional\u00a0training programs, designed to\u00a0provide\u00a0employees\u00a0using\u00a0the\u00a0tool with\u00a0a baseline\u00a0understanding\u00a0on best…<\/p>\n
