Linux\u00a0Mint\u00a0developers\u00a0are\u00a0considering\u00a0a\u00a0change\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0distro\u2019s traditional\u00a0six-month\u00a0release\u00a0schedule.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Project leader Clement Lefebvre thinks moving to a longer development cycle would allow the team to spend more time developing features, rather than fixing and testing to meet its current deadlines.<\/p>\n

If the distro does reduce its release rate, it could affect the release date of Linux Mint 23 later this year, meaning an end to the traditional biannual release cadence for its main edition. It\u2019s unclear if such a shift would affect Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). <\/p>\n

For fixed-schedule Linux distributions like Ubuntu, a predictable release cadence helps to focus engineering priorities. It also give users stability, knowing major changes won\u2019t appear out of thin air.<\/p>\n

Not all distros opt for fix-releases, though. Rolling release distros favour constant flux, while others prefer a \u2018ready when it\u2019s ready\u2019 approach, like elementaryOS.<\/p>\n

A slower release pace would match Linux Mint\u2019s considered approach to OS development<\/p>\n

Codenames are also on Lefebvre\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n

Linux Mint reached the end of its alphabetical codenames with the Linux Mint 22.3 \u201cZena\u201d release in January, marking the final \u2018Z\u2019 release. Slowing down the release rate might allow for more creative choices going forward.<\/p>\n

For Lefebvre, a slower pace would match Linux Mint\u2019s considered approach to development, i.e., taking time to do things properly, with its users in mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think one of our strengths is that we\u2019re doing things incrementally and changing things slowly\u201d, he says, citing past decisions to stick with LTS releases, reject Snap packages and create alternatives to upstream GNOME software as examples of the project\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n

Committing to releasing major updates every six months \u2013 barring the odd delay \u2013 works well in delivering incremental, iterative improvements, but does it cap ambition?…<\/p>\n
