The new edition is based on Linux kernel 6.18.2 and comprehensively updates the entire toolchain, including GCC 15.2.0, glibc 2.42, Binutils 2.45.1, util-linux 2.41.2, and e2fsprogs 1.47.3. Despite this extensive modernization, the distribution remains true to its principle of providing an extremely lean and modular system that focuses on the essentials and loads extensions only when needed.

The smallest editions, Core and CorePure64, are only about 20 and 24 megabytes, respectively. This means that Tiny Core remains one of the most compact actively maintained Linux distributions available. The 64-bit versions for modern x86_64 systems also adhere to this philosophy. CorePure64 is a pure command line variant aimed at experienced users, while TinyCorePure64 has a minimalist graphical interface and takes up around 41 megabytes. CorePlus, at around 275 megabytes, is an extended variant that integrates additional drivers and tools, but still remains well below classic desktop distributions.

The new 6.18.2 kernel extends hardware support and improves compatibility with current platform technology. This includes Apple’s M2 series, new low-power processors from Intel’s Core Ultra 300 series, and modern haptic touchpads. With this update, Tiny Core positions itself not only as a system for old or low-resource hardware, but also as a minimalist option for modern devices where reduced overhead is desired.

With GCC 15.2.0, the distribution gets a current compiler that supports extended language features in C, C++, and OpenMP. OpenMP 5.2 and 6.0 bring, among other things, metadirective and declare-variant functions, which are particularly relevant for parallel and scientific applications.
