An \u201cAI-supported school safety tool\u201d that works with existing school\u00a0security\u00a0cameras will be piloted\u00a0in\u00a0three Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) high schools beginning March 2,\u00a0according to\u00a0MCPS\u00a0officials.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis pilot is a careful, short-term opportunity to test a potential tool, gather feedback from our school community, and determine whether it meaningfully supports the work our staff already do every day to keep students safe,\u201d\u00a0Marcus Jones,\u00a0MCPS\u00a0chief safety officer,\u00a0said in\u00a0a\u00a0Monday\u00a0letter\u00a0to families whose students\u00a0attend the three schools.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The announcement of the pilot came just hours before a 16-year-old\u00a0allegedly\u00a0shot and injured another student\u00a0Monday afternoon\u00a0at Thomas S. Wootton High School\u00a0in\u00a0Rockville.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0district is utilizing VOLT-AI (Violence Observation & Lead Tracking),\u00a0an AI-supported school safety\u00a0tool\u00a0designed\u00a0to help staff\u00a0\u201cnotice and respond to potential safety concerns more quickly,\u201d at\u00a0these\u00a0three high schools:\u00a0Bethesda-Chevy Chase High in Bethesda,\u00a0Col. Zadok Magruder High\u00a0in Rockville and Seneca Valley High in Germantown, Jones said in the letter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the letter and the VOLT-AI website, the\u00a0technology\u00a0works with existing school security cameras in public areas\u00a0such as\u00a0entrances and common spaces to\u00a0detect\u00a0weapons, fights, medical\u00a0emergencies\u00a0and other situations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once\u00a0a situation is flagged\u00a0by the technology tool, \u201ctrained school staff\u201d review the information and decide whether a response is needed.\u00a0VOLT-AI\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0make decisions or take actions on its own, Jones said in the Monday letter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEssentially, it is an additional set of eyes that allows school staff to respond more quickly to potential safety concerns,\u201d Jones said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The technology\u00a0tool\u00a0also\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0monitor\u00a0individual student devices, private messages, or social media. Nor does it\u00a0use facial recognition or\u00a0identify\u00a0people by name;…<\/p>\n
