Google has officially confirmed that its Quick Share feature will soon allow Android users to transfer files directly to Apple\u2019s AirDrop, expanding a capability previously thought to be exclusive to the Pixel 10 series.<\/p>\n

The announcement by Eric Kay, Android\u2019s vice president of engineering, clarifies that the cross-platform functionality first teased in November will roll out to a wide range of Android devices beyond the current Pixel 10 series.<\/p>\n

Speaking to media at Google\u2019s Taipei office, Mr Kay said the tech giant is committed to ensuring seamless interoperability between Android handsets and Apple – iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s strategy involves transitioning the Quick Share Extension from a system-level background service into a standalone application on the Play Store. This shift is intended to decouple the feature from specific hardware, ensuring it is not restricted solely to Google\u2019s own Pixel brand.<\/p>\n

While a definitive list of compatible devices has not yet been released, several manufacturers have already signalled their intent to adopt the technology.<\/p>\n

Nothing Phone has been the first third-party brand to confirm it will integrate the updated Quick Share feature. Meanwhile, chipmaker Qualcomm has indicated it is working on software optimisations to ensure Snapdragon-powered devices can match the file-sharing performance seen on the Pixel 10.<\/p>\n

The initiative follows a joint pledge made by Google and the Android team in December to prioritise “frictionless” sharing experiences for users who frequently move between different mobile platforms.<\/p>\n

Currently, sharing high-resolution photos or large documents between Android and iOS often requires third-party cloud services or messaging apps, which can compress file quality. The integration of Quick Share and AirDrop aims to eliminate these hurdles using a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct protocols.<\/p>\n
