A possible RDNA 4M architecture moniker, “GCN GFX11.7 (RDNA 4m),” was just spotted in AMD’s LLVM Linux patches on GitHub. This moniker carries the GFX 11.7 tag, which is neither fully RDNA 3 nor RDNA 4, but sits somewhere between the two. <\/p>\n

If you recall, there was previously a report that said AMD would continue to use RDNA 3.5 as iGPUs instead of moving to RDNA 4, which aligns with this finding. This could mean that the new GFX11.7-based RDNA 4m iGPUs may use RDNA 3 as their base while incorporating RDNA 4-exclusive features such as FSR 4 and FSR Redstone.<\/p>\n

For those unaware, RDNA 3 uses the GFX 11 branch. Similarly, RDNA 3.5, which is used in iGPUs for handhelds and laptops, follows the more evolved GFX 11.5 branch, while RDNA 4 adopts the newer GFX 12 branch. This positioning suggests that RDNA 4m sits between RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4.<\/p>\n

A few hours after the potential RDNA 4m’s discovery, AMD seemingly submitted a pull request that stated:<\/p>\n

“[AMDGPU] Add fp8\/bf8 conversion instructions for gfx1170.”<\/p>\n

This reported addition introduces FP8\/BF8 conversion instructions for the GFX1170 (11.7) branch, which could give this new RDNA 4m-based architecture the ability to support FSR 4 and FSR Redstone.<\/p>\n

Many fans have requested FSR 4 support for existing Radeon RX 6000 GPUs, RX 7000 GPUs, and handheld gaming devices. However, FSR 4 is not available on those GPUs because both features require the FP8 instruction set, which is not present in RDNA 2, RDNA 3, and RDNA 3.5 architectures.<\/p>\n

This likely means that only future integrated GPUs built on the GFX1170 (11.7) branch or RDNA 4m architecture will receive support for FSR 4 and FSR Redstone.<\/p>\n
