(WBRC) – The latest social media trend has people uploading personal photos to create AI cartoon caricatures, but a local expert warns sharing those images could come with hidden risks.

When users upload photos to AI tools, they give the platforms more than just a picture, according to a UAB cybersecurity researcher. Those images train the AI model, which studies facial features and everything in the pictures.

“But there are some things you don’t want the model to learn. For example, you upload your image and your bio features are literally there, right? So the color of your eyes and your hair color and these kind of bioinformations. That can be also learned by this model,” said Shuya Feng, UAB cybersecurity researcher and assistant professor.

The information is often used to access bank accounts or medical records on phones. Images uploaded to an AI model always have the possibility to be leaked.

That puts users at risk of having their image used for deepfakes or identity theft.

There is a simple and effective way to protect personal data. Users can opt out of data sharing with AI models.

“The quick suggestion is that you don’t share the information with the model. So even you use the AI services, there is an option that I don’t want to share my data with the model, with the model training,” Feng said.

For ChatGPT users, click on the profile icon, select settings and go to data controls. Click on “Improve the model for everyone” and turn that off.

“If you don’t want to share your data with the model, they won’t learn anything from you. They won’t collect the data. So even they are in the chat history, but the model won’t learn anything from there,” Feng said.

Popular models like ChatGPT take steps to protect user privacy, but experts suggest turning off data sharing if users don’t want their information shared.

Even with data sharing turned off, users should never provide personal details or pictures that show their…

Source

AI caricature trend poses privacy risks, cybersecurity expert warns https://www.wbrc.com/2026/02/07/ai-caricature-trend-poses-privacy-risks-cybersecurity-expert-warns/ Publish Date: 2026-02-06 23:05:00 Source…

https://gray-wbrc-prod.gtv-cdn.com/resizer/v2/R4GR7ICPPJFQNN7PZIVBSUCRIQ.jpg?auth=8659032380e8674aaa4004c92622b459fbc5bd4cec81ee2de3a0d01615e2b614&width=1200&height=600&smart=true
[15
20
post-210839","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cybersecurity","tag-artificial-intelligence
