The company updated its privacy policy on Jan. 15 to allow harvesting of user data for AI training. Customers are opted in by default, but it\u2019s relatively simple to opt out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"u-speakableText-p2\">Starlink says that it may use your personal information \u201cto train our machine learning or artificial intelligence models.\u201d The policy adds that this data might also be shared with third parties \u201cfor training artificial intelligence models, including for their own independent purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, when I checked my own Starlink account, I was greeted with a message telling me, \u201cYou allow your data to be used to train AI models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"screenshot of starlink showing AI disclaimer\" height=\"532.6732673267327\" width=\"1200\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>   <span class=\"c-shortcodeImage_caption g-inner-spacing-right-small g-text-xxsmall\"><\/p>\n<p>Starlink automatically opts you into allowing personal information to be used to train AI models.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <span class=\"c-shortcodeImage_credit g-inner-spacing-right-small g-outer-spacing-top-xsmall g-color-text-meta g-text-xxxsmall\">Starlink \/ CNET<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s part of this whole rush to just throw everything into the data-driven machine-learning nexus, and then hoping something more good will come out of it, your private information be damned,\u201d William Budington, a technologist for the digital rights nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, told CNET.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What data Starlink is gobbling up is the big question. The privacy policy outlines the typical data you\u2019d expect an internet provider to collect: contact information, performance metrics and billing details. But Starlink also says it may collect \u201ccommunication information, such as audio, electronic or visual information\u201d and, cryptically, \u201cinferences we may make from other personal information we collect.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A separate Starlink page says, \u201cYour internet history will never be shared with AI models, including individual browsing habits or geolocation tracking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traffic on most sites is encrypted through the HTTPS standard, which means Starlink won\u2019t\u00a0necessarily be able to use your emails or personal communications to train AI. Still, the sites you visit (and when you visit them) are incredibly useful to companies training AI models &#8212; and potentially damaging to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/home\/internet\/starlink-updates-privacy-policy-for-ai-training\/\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starlink Is Using Your Personal Data to Train AI.
