Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak encouraged students to pursue their passions, reflecting on his love of technology and the value of a college education, at a talk on Monday.<\/p>\n

The event was hosted by Stanford\u2019s chapter of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and moderated by Ethan Song \u201928, its student chair. Over 300 students, faculty and members of the community attended the event.<\/p>\n

When asked about his personal educational journey, Wozniak reminisced on his time at University of Colorado, Boulder.<\/p>\n

The institution \u201cjust struck [his] heart so much,\u201d Wozniak said. It was a place \u201cwhere [he and his friends] could throw snowballs in [their] underwear,\u201d making for a lighthearted moment that drew laughs from the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wozniak commented on the cost of education, talking about how his \u201cparents said they could only afford one year\u201d at Boulder, which led him to transfer to UC Berkeley. Wozniak mentioned that he \u201crewards institutions that were a part of [his] life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Song wrote in an email to The Daily that his questions were meant to provoke stories and insights, rather than \u201cgeneric founder advice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe asked about his pranks and projects, why he built things just for the fun of it and not for exits and IPOs,\u201d he wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wozniak completed coding and engineering projects for \u201cpeople all over the world\u201d \u2014 including the first effort to bring movies into hotel rooms \u2014 even as a college student. His price for every project: a flat fee of 5 cents.<\/p>\n

During the talk, Song noted that he \u201cthinks students do things a little differently\u201d now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it\u2019s less for fun. Students say they\u2019re building GPT wrappers, they\u2019re trying to get an exit pitch to VCs and make that million bucks,\u201d Song said. For Wozniak, however, founding Apple was motivated more by impact than income. He \u201cwanted to be an engineer to help the average Joe,\u201d Wozniak said.<\/p>\n
