Under India\u2019s updated Customs Rules for 2026, the duty-free allowance for passengers arriving by air or sea has been increased to Rs 75,000 from February 2, 2026. The higher limit applies to Indian residents, NRIs, and people of Indian origin, allowing them to bring personal-use items like gadgets, clothes, watches, and accessories without paying customs duty, up from the earlier Rs 50,000 cap.<\/p>\n<p><strong>iPhones and Laptops Get a Big Customs Boost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For iPhone buyers, India\u2019s updated Customs Rules for 2026 come as a clear win. Since iPhones are usually cheaper in the US, the higher duty-free allowance of Rs 75,000 means a large part of the phone\u2019s price can now fall under the limit, reducing the chances of paying extra at the airport. Under the new rules, one laptop or notebook can be brought into India duty-free and does not count towards the Rs 75,000 allowance. This applies to travellers aged 18 and above, excluding airline crew. In effect, your laptop no longer eats into your shopping budget.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lower Duties, Clearer Limits for Travellers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the value of items like an iPhone exceeds Rs 75,000, the excess is now taxed at a lower rate. Travellers will pay a 10 percent customs duty on the extra amount, along with a 10 percent social welfare surcharge on that duty. Earlier, the basic duty was 20 percent, so the revised structure almost halves the additional cost.<\/p>\n<p>The lower duty applies to most personal-use items such as smartphones, cameras, smartwatches, and even certain food products. However, some exclusions remain, including cars, alcohol and tobacco beyond permitted limits, flat-screen TVs, and gold bars.
