Malaria is a life-threatening disease\u00a0caused by\u00a0Plasmodium\u00a0parasite species and is\u00a0largely spread\u00a0between people through the bites of\u00a0infected female\u00a0Anopheles\u00a0mosquitoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of the five\u00a0Plasmodium\u00a0species that infect humans,\u00a0Plasmodium falciparum\u00a0is the\u00a0deadliest and is\u00a0most prevalent in Africa,\u00a0which carries a disproportionately high malaria burden. The World Health Organisation reported that, in 2024,\u00a095% of malaria cases\u00a0and\u00a095%\u00a0malaria deaths occurred\u00a0in\u00a0Africa.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Current approaches to tackling malaria\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Currently, approaches to tackling malaria include\u00a0preventative chemotherapies, chemoprophylaxis for travellers,\u00a0treating\u00a0confirmed\u00a0cases with antimalarials,\u00a0and\u00a0controlling the mosquito vector.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying are the two major methods of controlling the mosquito vector to prevent malaria spread.\u00a0ITNs protect against malaria spread through shielding against mosquito bites,\u00a0interfering with host-seeking\u00a0mosquito\u00a0behavior\u00a0and\u00a0either killing or reducing fertility in mosquitoes that land on the net.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The mass use of ITNs is estimated to have\u00a0averted 1.5 billion malaria cases\u00a0globally between 2000 and 2022.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0malaria still infects over 250 million people per year\u00a0and claims more than half a million lives, mostly among children under the age of 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Part of the\u00a0burden of\u00a0tackling malaria lies in political and economic challenges,\u00a0Dr. Federico\u00a0Appetecchia, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told\u00a0Technology Networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMore sustained funding and more vertical malaria programmes could homogenize and increase the surveillance systems, supply chain, and general health services,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, it\u2019s widely acknowledged that the main portion of the burden is carried by technical challenges\u2014with the rapid growing resistance of both\u00a0Plasmodium\u00a0parasites…<\/p>\n
