NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — As police departments across the country continue to face recruiting and staffing challenges, some agencies in Middle Tennessee say technology is helping officers work more efficiently and make the most of existing resources.
The trend comes as departments increasingly invest in tools such as drones, license plate readers, public safety cameras and real-time crime centers to assist officers in the field and support investigations.
According to the Police Executive Research Forum, many law enforcement agencies nationwide continue to report staffing and recruitment challenges, prompting departments to look for new ways to improve efficiency without sacrificing public safety.
In Murfreesboro, police say technology has become a critical part of daily operations.
The department’s Real-Time Crime Center uses automated license plate readers, public safety cameras and drones to support officers responding to incidents and assist detectives with investigations.
Police describe the technology as a “force multiplier” that allows existing personnel to accomplish more with available resources.
Through the first quarter of 2026, Murfreesboro’s Real-Time Crime Center reported 652 successful case assists, including identifying suspects, locating vehicles and generating investigative leads. The center also helped clear 140 cases and contributed to the arrests of 129 wanted individuals.
The department says the biggest benefits have been improved operational efficiency, enhanced investigative capabilities and increased case solvability.
In Mount Juliet, Police Chief Tyler Chandler says technology is also influencing long-term staffing needs.
Chandler told city leaders that investments in technology, including license plate readers, cameras and the department’s expanding drone program, have helped improve efficiency as the city continues to grow.
