Kentucky’s efforts to protect consumer privacy are drawing national attention.
During a recent hearing before a U.S. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, testimony highlighted Kentucky’s consumer data privacy laws as a model for potential federal legislation.
Ashli Watts pointed to the Commonwealth’s work in strengthening privacy rights and specifically recognized State Representative Josh Branscum of Russell Springs for his leadership on the issue.
In 2024, lawmakers approved House Bill 15, sponsored by Branscum, giving Kentuckians greater control over their personal information. The law allows consumers to access, correct, and delete personal data, and gives them the option to prevent the sale of that information.
Branscum says it’s encouraging to see Kentucky’s work recognized nationally as Congress considers a nationwide framework for consumer data privacy.
The General Assembly continued those efforts this year with passage of House Bill 692, also sponsored by Branscum. The measure is among the first in the nation to regulate Automatic Content Recognition technology used by some smart televisions and monitors to collect viewing data.
Supporters say the law helps prevent unauthorized data collection and gives consumers greater control over their personal information.
With growing attention from Congress and other states, Kentucky continues to be recognized as a leader in consumer privacy protection.
