Samsung has revealed exciting new foldable display technology, which could be its greatest weapon in the fight against the incoming foldable iPhone from Apple.

The next generation Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 devices will benefit from new Flex Titanium technology, which is more durable while reducing the visibility of the display crease, Samsung says.

Samsung says the tech uses a titanium-allow film and a titanium plate, which work together to “balance slimness, flexibility and strength within the foldable display structure.”

The visible display crease has been an unavoidable inconvenience for foldable screens since Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold back in 2019. However, the new innovation builds on those “seven generations of foldable innovation and engineering expertise” to diminish the effects of the fold.

Apple reportedly has its own plan to reduce the effects of the screen crease with an innovative ‘Liquid Metal’ hinge. So this appears to be Samsung’s answer to that.

Samsung seems particularly keen to point out the experience in the field ahead of Apple’s overdue entry into the market. “Innovative technologies can only reach their full potential and provide meaningful user experiences through continuous refinement in real-world conditions and the foldable category is no exception,” the company says in a blog post on Wednesday.

“Across seven generations of Galaxy foldables, Samsung has listened closely to consumer feedback. This has given the company a deep understanding of what users expect from the category: a larger, more immersive viewing experience with less visible crease — without compromising durability or portability.”
