Google has come under fresh regulatory scrutiny in Switzerland after the country’s competition authority began examining changes to the way Android devices are configured for new users, as per a Reuters report.

The Swiss Competition Commission (COMCO) announced that it has opened a preliminary inquiry into Google’s decision to discontinue the search engine selection screen for Android users in Switzerland. The regulator will assess whether the move could restrict competition in the online search market.

Previously, Android users setting up a new device were presented with multiple search engine options before selecting a default service. COMCO said that feature is no longer available in Switzerland, resulting in Google Search being automatically assigned as the default.

The regulator believes default settings can significantly influence user behaviour and market dynamics. Without an alternative selection screen, competing search providers may find it harder to reach users at the most critical stage of device activation, potentially reinforcing Google’s existing position in the market.

COMCO also pointed out that Android users in the European Economic Area continue to receive the search selection option, raising questions over why Swiss consumers are treated differently despite being part of a closely connected digital market.

The investigation will determine whether Google’s decision is compatible with the Swiss Cartel Act. At this stage, the regulator has not alleged any wrongdoing, and the inquiry is intended to establish whether a formal competition case should proceed.

Responding to the development, Google said it is aware of the regulator’s concerns and intends to work with the authority during the review process.

The company stated that it will cooperate fully with COMCO as it examines the matter.
