The impact of the AI boom on Apple extends well beyond software development and rising component costs. It could fundamentally reshape the company’s Apple silicon roadmap too.
According to Bloomberg, AI is having an increasing influence on Apple’s chip development strategy, beginning with the upcoming M6 generation. Apple typically introduces a base M-series chip before following up with more powerful Pro, Max, and Ultra variants over the subsequent months. However, the company is reportedly considering a different approach for the M6 series.
Instead of completing the M6 family with the M6 Pro and M6 Max, word on the street is that Apple will jump straight to the M7 chip in the first half of 2027. The M7 Pro and M7 Max are then expected to arrive towards the end of the year, followed by an M7 Ultra in 2028. The latest rumours also say the M7 Ultra could support as much as 1.5TB of memory.
AI is largely driving the reported change in Apple’s silicon strategy. Significant neural processing upgrades are reportedly planned for the M7 series, with the M7 Ultra potentially delivering AI performance comparable to that of dedicated AI accelerators. As a result, Apple is said to be of the notion that there is greater value in accelerating the transition to its next-generation chip architecture rather than completing the M6 lineup.
The implications could extend beyond the Mac and iPad. Apple also uses its custom silicon to power parts of its data centre infrastructure, making the M-series roadmap increasingly important to the company’s broader AI ambitions.
Accelerating the M7 rollout could help Apple overhaul its AI server infrastructure and close the gap with rivals that have invested heavily in dedicated AI computing hardware. The company is also rumoured to be developing a new server chip based on the capabilities of the M7 Ultra, with a potential launch by 2029.
