Over the years, our smartphones have become the one piece of tech that never leaves our side when we travel. Whether it’s navigating a new city, contacting the host for the stay, or just keeping yourself entertained while waiting for transport, it’s safe to say that traveling would look very different without our beloved devices.

As convenient as they are, though, Android phones aren’t fully optimized for travel right out of the box. I’ve already shared some of the changes I make before every trip, but there are plenty of other small tweaks that can make traveling a lot smoother than it already is. So, here are a few additional changes you should make before heading to the airport.

Provision an eSIM before I leave home

We’re now firmly in the era where almost every phone supports an eSIM. Even though the technology hasn’t fully delivered on the promise of seamless carrier switching, it’s quietly become an indispensable part of overseas travel.

By setting up an eSIM ahead of your trip, you’re skipping the headaches and overpriced tourist plans sold at airport SIM kiosks. Plus, you get more flexibility in your plan choice—you’re not locked to whatever provider you come across first or a plan that doesn’t fit your needs. You can finally stop paying for 15 days of coverage if you’re only staying for a week.

While you could technically set up your eSIM after you leave home, I strongly recommend doing it ahead of your trip while you’re still connected to your home Wi-Fi or mobile data plan. That way, you won’t have to rely on slow airport or gas station Wi-Fi.
