Maputo, 3 Jul (AIM) – The Mozambican Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Américo Muchanga, has reaffirmed the need for the country to increase investment in cybersecurity, at a time when 900 people have fallen victim to cyber scams and financial fraud out of a total of 40,000 cyber incidents recorded in 2025.

According to the Minister, who was speaking on Wednesday, in the southern province of Gaza, at the ministry’s 2nd Coordinating Council, held under the motto “Accelerating Digital Transformation to serve the Citizen”, Mozambique is undergoing a period of profound transformation, in which digitalization has ceased to be merely an option and has become a necessity, “an indispensable condition for economic development, state efficiency, and improving the population’s quality of life.”

“Alongside the implementation of key state digital systems, the government is expanding connectivity to hundreds of rural locations, bringing the Internet to schools and higher education institutions, as well as strengthening Community Multimedia Centers”, he said.

The minister said that the government is developing foundational systems for cybersecurity and national digital identity.

“These tools will simplify procedures, bring services closer to citizens, increase transparency, and strengthen trust in electronic transactions. The government has been laying the groundwork for building a society that is increasingly digital, inclusive, and prepared to meet future challenges”, he said.

He added that conditions have been established for the expansion of 5G networks in Mozambique, opening up new opportunities for investment, innovation, and economic growth.
