Alphabet GOOG lost its appeal against a 4.1 billion, or $4.7 billion, EU antitrust fine tied to Google’s Android operating system.
The European Court of Justice dismissed Google and Alphabet’s challenge, upholding regulators’ finding that Google abused Android’s market dominance to favor its own search business. The ruling is legally binding and ends a case that began when the European Commission imposed the penalty in 2018.
The court said the appeal was dismissed, confirming the penalty tied to Google Search’s abuse of dominance in the Android ecosystem.
the fine itself is old news, but the ruling reinforces Europe’s tougher stance on Big Tech platform power. It also keeps regulatory pressure on Google at a time when the company is already facing scrutiny over search, app stores and AI competition.
The next thing to watch is whether the ruling strengthens future EU enforcement against Google’s broader digital ecosystem.
